S.I.T. FILE
S.I.T. (Special Information Tone) is the three-note melody heard when you’ve dialed a phone number that is no longer in service (or can’t be reached for a number of other reasons). This file can be used to your advantage to reduce the number of telemarketing phone calls. (Or so the theory goes.) Precede your answering machine’s outgoing message with the SIT. Supposedly, your phone number is removed from a telemarketer’s database if their auto dialing computer encounters a SIT. I’ve used the SIT on our answering machine for the past four months and have noticed a marked decrease in those annoying telemarketing calls. (Coincidence? Maybe.) Download the SIT file to your computer. Then add it to your outgoing message by first placing the answering machine’s microphone near your computer’s speaker. Press Record. Play the SIT followed by your message.
