New consumer complaints about mysterious DVD purchases
According to a news article appearing on the MSNBC.com website, federal authorities are investigating a rash of phantom charges appearing on consumer credit card bills. The apparent scam starts with a 1-cent or $1 charge followed later by a later amount. The charging merchant is listed as Pluto Data or PLUTO D, NICOSIA.
This latest scheme has affected consumers worldwide with reports coming not only from the U.S., but from Australia and Great Britain as well.
Dan Clements, credit card fraud expert of CardCops.com, speculated that the thieves have stolen a large number of credit cards (or credit info), and either steal or create fake merchant accounts, then runs a series of bogus charges through it. The money is then deposited into the bank accounts where upon it's withdrawn.
If you find any similar billed charges, it's best to report and dispute them, says Clements.
